University of Arizona Secures Five DOE Genesis Mission AI Awards, Including Two Led by VIP Faculty
Dr. Laura Condon, a VIP team lead, is part of one of the five AI projects the University of Arizona just earned through the Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission. Her work focuses on building an AI model that can better predict water availability, groundwater flow, and flood risks across the United States.
Another VIP leader, Dr. Scott Saleska, is heading a project that uses AI to study how water, plants, and microbes interact underground to improve environmental models.
These two VIP leaders helped UArizona stand out as one of only four universities to win five lead awards in this national competition. Their projects show how VIP teams are contributing to big federal research efforts by tackling real environmental challenges with AI.
From the article:
"Another project, led by ecology and evolutionary biology professor Scott Saleska, will use AI to help understand how water, plants, microbes and minerals interact beneath the Earth’s surface."
"The university is also contributing to a fifth project led by Argonne National Laboratory. Hydrology and atmospheric sciences professor Laura Condon is collaborating on research that will develop an AI foundation model to improve predictions of water availability, groundwater movement and flood hazards across the continental United States."
