Archaeological Mapping Lab

Goals

The goal of the Archaeological Mapping Lab is the study of the Sanctuary of Zeus at Mt. Lykaion, known in antiquity as the birthplace of Zeus.  The is a long term University of Arizona excavation and Survey Project in Greece, 2002-present, in which we are uncovering the famous sanctuary site that includes both religious and athletic components. We study the results of the excavation in the lab in Tucson by reading notebooks, cataloguing finds, analyzing stratigraphy, making digital drawings, recreating buildings and preparing publications.  We are also now excavating the site, with new results each summer.

As the Archaeological Mapping Lab we are involved in several different archaeological projects, involving excavation, survey, mapping, historical interpretation, and aerial research and analysis, including Lidar.  We are also involved in nine lab-related website projects that we maintain during the year.

Issues Involved or Addressed

As an archaeology laboratory we are concerned with work at, and results of, archaeological excavation and survey at a number of ancient cities and sanctuaries around the Mediterranean. We have the records from a famous excavation at Mt. Lykaion in Arcadia that we are utilizing to prepare publications, create drawings and maps, and work with databases.  We are actively excavating at Mt. Lykaion with new data results each summer. We are also working on the ancient cities of Corinth and Rome where we have undertaken research in the past, creating drawings, reconstructions and interpretations.  We are also in the midst of creating Greece’s first national heritage park, a large area of 675 square kilometers in size, called Parrhasian Heritage Park, located in Arcadia, Elis and Messenia, Greece.
