From Fishmeal to Innovation: Dr. Kevin M. Fitzsimmons and the Future of Aquaculture
From fishmeal to innovation: Insights from a lifetime in aquaculture Kevin Fitzsimmons
The University of Arizona’s Vertically Integrated Projects (VIP) program is proud to feature Dr. Kevin M. Fitzsimmons, Director of International Initiatives, Research Specialist, Professor, and Team Lead for the VIP MISAS: Modular Integrated Sustainable Agricultural Systems, for his lifetime contributions to aquaculture and sustainable food systems.
According to Dr. Fitzsimmons, aquaculture has evolved from its early dependence on fishmeal and fish oil to an industry now embracing alternative ingredients and circular systems. “Moving away from fishmeal is not just about protecting marine resources , it’s about rethinking how we feed the world sustainably,” he said.
As highlighted in his recent feature “From Fishmeal to Innovation: Insights from a Lifetime in Aquaculture” (Aquafeed.com), Dr. Fitzsimmons reflects on key challenges, including the need for sustainable feeds, and how initiatives like the F3 Challenge are accelerating adoption of plant-based, microbial, and insect-derived proteins.
