Inclusive Mentoring of Undergraduate Researchers

Each semester, the VIP Program offers a six-hour training for mentors (faculty, staff, postdocs and graduate students) who are actively involved, or plan to become involved, in mentoring undergraduate students in research. The training is set up as four 1.5-hour participatory online meetings. VIP Team Leaders, potential VIP leaders, and others mentoring or planning to mentor undergraduate students are welcome to join this community of mentors.   

Inclusive Mentoring of Undergraduate Researchers: Training

Target Audience

  • Faculty, staff, posdoctoral scholars,  graduate students, or designated campus colleagues involved in, or preparing for, mentorship of undergraduate researchers

Delivery Modality

  • Synchronous online learning (6 hrs) - four workshops with distinct content, each 1.5 hours long
  • Asynchronous learning and document development (if micro-credential/digital badge desired): develop a mentor-mentee compact and a mentoring philosophy for your own use after review by training facilitators.

Learning Outcomes

Mentors will:

  • Build a learning community with other undergraduate research mentors.
  • Acquire knowledge and skills to align mentor and mentee expectations on projects.
  • Clearly communicate expectations for the mentoring relationship. 
  • Practice techniques for maintaining effective communication, including active listening and communicating across diverse dimensions.
  • Learn about and reflect upon mentoring students in a culturally responsive manner.
  • Articulate their personal mentoring philosophy and plan.

*If you would like to earn a micro-credential/digital badge, in addition to attendance at synchronous trainings, the following two documents must be submitted to training facilitators:

  • A written mentor-mentee compact.
  • A written mentoring philosophy document.
