Sleep and Circadian Research Group
Goals
The overall goal of our team is to promote quality of life for patients with sleep disorders by improving knowledge in the area of sleep and circadian research so that the knowledge gained can ultimately translate into patient care / improving patient outcomes.
Issues Involved or Addressed
- Cardiorespiratory interactions during sleep in patients with obstructive sleep apnea on and off treatment
- The impact of treatment (positive airway pressure therapy, mandibular advancement devices and other) in patients with obstructive sleep apnea on clinically relevant patient outcomes
- Cardiac and other effects of jet lag and its treatment
Methods and Tech
- Primary project: retrospective review of existing raw data signals including electrocardiogram and respiratory signals from in-laboratory sleep studies in patients with obstructive sleep apnea on and off treatment
- Secondary project: closely associated with primary project evaluates the clinical effects (i.e. patient outcomes) of treating obstructive sleep apnea with positive airway pressure therapy, mandibular advancement device and other possible treatments
- Tertiary project: cardiovascular and clinically relevant effects of active implementation of light, melatonin, and exercise on participants with simulated jet lag
Academic Majors of Interest
Our team is open to all majors, though those with interest in human subjects research are particularly invited to apply. Furthermore, we invite those with machine learning and artificial intelligence skills to actively implement knowledge gained through our research in prospective studies moving forward.
