Science Communication for Social Good
Goals
The Science Communication for Social Good VIP team is dedicated to investigating how journalism and other types of mass communication about science topics can serve a positive role in society. Students will use social scientific research methods to direct research at the intersection of science communication and social issues.
Issues Involved or Addressed
Students beginning in the 2025–2026 academic year will contribute to a project focused on mapping the field of science journalism as a socially important form of science communication. This project will the following research questions:
- What are the main research problems in the field of science journalism?
- Who are the most important researchers in the field of science journalism?
- What are the primary methods employed by science journalism researchers?
- How is the field of science journalism related to other fields?
As students contribute to this research, they will develop a deep understanding of the field of science journalism. Returning students will be encouraged to lead their own dedicated research projects in science journalism and other forms of mass communication for the public good. New students will be invited to support and expand these initiatives, helping the projects to come to fruition.
Methods and Tech
The team leaders are experience social scientists who bring a variety of research methodologies students may learn from. The main research project for the 2025–2026 academic year will involve:
- Computational text analysis
- Network analysis
- Qualitative data analysis
Weekly meetings will introduce students to a wide variety of social science research methodologies, including interview-based, survey, and experimental data collection.
As students develop their own research projects, they will receive more specialized training in relevant research methodologies.
