VIP Team Lead Dr. Gerardo Lopez Explains Why Cyclospora is so Hard to Trace

VIP Team Leader Dr. Gerardo Lopez, who leads the team "Investigating the Foodborne Parasite Cyclospora in Environmental Waters" is helping us track and understand the parasite better. Dr. Lopez studies show how the parasite enters water sources. He collects samples across regions in the U.S. and Mexico.

In the interview, Dr. Lopez explained how Cyclospora outbreaks are difficult to track since symptoms take 2-14 days to appear. He and his research team use FDA and CDC testing methods to track the parasite in environmental samples. This is to help the produce industry reduce contamination risks.
