VIP Team Lead Dr. Zafer Mutlu and Students Make Discovery on Quantum Material
VIP Team Lead Dr. Zafer Mutlu and his students have made a great discovery involving quantum materials.
Strips of semiconductors called graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) could potentially help replace silicon-based microchips. More importantly, they have the likelihood to be able to hold up in extreme environments.
Dr. Mutlu and his team learned they could potentially use the electrical current from gamma radiation on the strip to detect high radiation in fusion reactors. Dr. Mutlu hopes to test different radiation levels and GNR sizes in future research.
From the article:
“The devices survive the exposure and still respond, but their electrical performance changes dramatically,” says principal investigator Zafer Mutlu from the University of Arizona in the US. “That's exactly the behaviour we want from a sensor.”
